Dexmedetomidine Added to Oxycodone PCA: Transient Haemodynamic Effects, No Clear Dose-Response
This post hoc analysis characterises blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory and plasma concentration data for dexmedetomidine-oxycodone patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) after lumbar fusion, informing ward-based safety questions for pain pharmacists.

Dexmedetomidine with oxycodone PCA may enhance pain relief safely.
Exploring dexmedetomidine as an adjunct to oxycodone PCA may offer opioid-sparing effects without respiratory compromise. Dexmedetomidine reduced mean arterial pressure and heart rate, but did not affect respiratory parameters or bradycardia. Findings suggest dexmedetomidine can be safely combined with oxycodone PCA, requiring further investigation for optimal dosing. Dexmedetomidine as an adjunct to oxycodone PCA may improve pain control without significant respiratory effects.
