Azithromycin-Ampicillin-Amoxicillin Regimen Lengthens Latency in PPROM, Retrospective Cohort Suggests
This single-center retrospective cohort offers low-cost, erythromycin-free regimen data for preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM), but its confounding and small antibiotic arm limit how far stewardship teams can extrapolate it.
Azithromycin extends latency in preterm premature rupture of membranes.
Preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM) poses risks for preterm birth. Choosing effective antibiotics can extend pregnancy duration. Antibiotic use reduced 48-hour birth rates (33.6% to 16%, p=0.04) and extended median time to birth. This retrospective study suggests azithromycin and ampicillin can delay birth after PPROM, but applicability may be limited by the study's observational design. In PPROM, azithromycin with ampicillin effectively extends time to birth.
