Background Information

Haloperidol may benefit ICU patients with delirium, especially hyperactive types.

Delirium is a common condition in ICU patients, impacting recovery and outcomes. Understanding the effect of haloperidol on different delirium subtypes could guide more effective treatments. Haloperidol was associated with increased days alive out of hospital and lower mortality in both hypoactive and hyperactive delirium, with a stronger effect on hyperactive delirium. This post hoc Bayesian analysis suggests haloperidol may offer benefits for ICU patients with delirium, especially those with hyperactive subtypes, although these findings need further confirmation. Haloperidol shows promise for treating both hypoactive and hyperactive delirium in ICU, especially the hyperactive subtype.
