Background Information

MDRO risk factors in ICUs spotlight antimicrobial stewardship needs.

Multidrug-resistant organism (MDRO) infections significantly impact patient outcomes in intensive care units (ICUs), necessitating targeted prevention and stewardship efforts. MDRO infections were seen in 10.4% of ICU admissions. Factors such as severity of illness, prior antibiotic exposure, mechanical ventilation, and inflammatory markers were associated with MDRO risk. These findings can guide ICU risk stratification efforts, but further validation and evaluation of time-dependent exposures are necessary. Identifying MDRO risk factors in ICUs supports improved antimicrobial stewardship.
