Background Information

GLP-1 receptor agonists show no increased bowel obstruction risk compared to SGLT2 inhibitors.

Patients and clinicians have raised concerns about the risk of bowel obstruction with glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs), impacting treatment choices for type 2 diabetes. In this large database study, GLP-1RA use was not linked to a higher risk of bowel obstruction or ileus compared to sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2is), with a hazard ratio of 0.80. The findings reassure clinicians about the gastrointestinal safety of GLP-1RAs compared to SGLT2is for type 2 diabetes, supporting their use without increased concern for bowel obstruction. GLP-1 receptor agonists do not increase bowel obstruction risk versus SGLT2 inhibitors.
