Pediatric Melatonin Linked to Small REM Sleep Reduction

Background Information

Melatonin may reduce REM sleep in children without affecting total sleep time.

Melatonin is commonly used as a sleep aid in children, yet its impact on sleep architecture using polysomnography (PSG) is not well understood. Outpatient melatonin use in children is associated with a small reduction in the percentage of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep but no differences in total sleep time or other sleep parameters. This study suggests melatonin use affects REM sleep without altering other sleep characteristics, but results might be influenced by residual confounding; further studies on dosage and adherence are needed. Melatonin may slightly reduce REM sleep in children without affecting overall sleep duration or quality.
