Background Information

Shorter treatment, same efficacy: a 6-month TB regimen works.

Rifampicin-resistant tuberculosis is challenging to treat, and shorter, effective regimens could improve patient compliance and outcomes. The 6-month regimen was found to be noninferior to the 9-month standard regimen, with similar safety profiles and successful outcomes in 86.1% and 86.0% of participants respectively. This phase 3 trial suggests that a 6-month regimen could be a viable alternative, though long-term studies are needed to confirm sustained efficacy and safety. A 6-month regimen for rifampicin-resistant tuberculosis is as effective as current 9-month treatment.
